The linked stories in Brandon Davis Jennings’ Waiting for the Enemy take readers from the Middle East to the Mojave Desert and back again, revealing a cast of characters that find themselves, unrelentingly, at the intersection of expectation and desire.

In “Bosnian Roulette,” Derrick is haunted by a comrade’s misguided desire to be a hero. In “Boots,” Derrick and his buddy Rake try to come to terms with what happened the day their squad came across an abandoned naval mine in a small Bosnian town. The title story, “Waiting for the Enemy,” features Derrick and Rake parachuting into the desert for a third time, ready to engage opposition on the ground. Instead they’re left guarding an empty base that they've captured uncontested. Days pass with no sign of life other than a camel that stumbles down a sand dune and tangles itself in razor wire. At once darkly funny and devastatingly astute, Waiting for the Enemy clarifies, in stark, beautiful prose, what it means to be human when the lines of morality are blurred and living righteously is easier said than done.

Brandon Davis Jennings is an Operation Iraq Freedom Veteran from West Virginia. He received an MFA from Bowling Green State University and a PhD in creative writing from Western Michigan University. His first full-length book of nonfiction, The Red Book Operation Iraqi Freedom is My Fault, will be released this summer from Little Presque Books. He currently writes in South Bend, Indiana, where he lives with his wife Tina, daughter Shannon, and two dogs.

Waiting for the Enemy Single edition by Brandon Davis Jennings Literature Fiction eBooks

It's been a week since I read this book, and I am still thinking about it, and I have a feeling I will think about it for a long time to come. Jennings writes with clarity and a calm strength, bringing the reader right into the scene. Though fictional, it feels very real, and every story is intense, gripping, and emotionally moving. I highly recommend this collection to anyone who is interested in reading high quality fiction that isn't afraid to stare down the darkness of war. An excellent and important work.

Waiting for the Enemy Single edition by Brandon Davis Jennings Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Brandon Davis Jennings' collection WAITING FOR THE ENEMY is wry, fierce, and full of heart. I can't wait to see more from this author, but in the meantime, get in on the ground floor and read this collection.
I started reading Waiting for the Enemy laying in a pirate bed next to my daughters in Disney World. I felt absurd in that setting. Decided to finish reading on Veteran's Day. The unexpected situations the characters found themselves in pushed me out of my comfort zone. Although one rarely grows or expands one's consciousness while comfortably tucked into a pirate ship shaped bed. I appreciated the push.
Some dark anecdotes about war and such, they are narratives that war was never as exciting as you'd expect, as bloody as you'd hope you never see, or as clean as you'd hope. They are very very dark... and very very realistic.
We often describe books as “not your typical war story,” but the narratives in this book are just that because the war—or wars—are almost always at the periphery. Often it’s just in the past or just in the future, and yet it casts a permanent shadow over these men. Jennings plays with memory—and the ways characters mistrust memory—as they try to piece together the meaning of their lives. These characters are flesh-and-bone human beings, and they’re honest because Jennings is honest. What they see and do is often ugly and raw, but the conscience underlying the book makes sure we feel the full spectrum of emotions. The book is gripping, tragic, and at times darkly funny. It’s also written by a pro.
The characters share their vulnerabilities in ways that make a connection with the reader. They then transport you to their setting. You are impacted and also feel the intrigued as to what follows.
A strong piece of writing. A metahor for being emotionally disconnected in life
Interesting but hard to follow.
